The Amalfi Coast is a renowned stretch of a mountainous coastline located in Naples in the Campania region of Italy. The southern end of the Bay of Naples stretches out in a steep and rocky peninsula that reaches towards the Isle of Capri. The coast is dotted with picturesque villages and towns which have been one of Italy’s major tourist attractions. The Amalfi Coast is widely considered Italy’s most scenic stretch of coastline. Its most famous towns are Amalfi, Positano and Ravello.
Nowadays the area’s principal industry is tourism, and a huge number of hotels have been squeezed into the restricted spaces of the small towns. Well-accustomed to catering for affluent foreign tourists, the area offers a generous selection of restaurants, bars, boutiques and boat trips.
Once a glorious maritime republic, Amalfi is the coast’s busiest town, but tourism aside, it’s a very beautiful place fringed by lemon terraces with a spectacular setting between sea and mountains, and a magnificent Arab-Norman cathedral.
Positano located on the Amalfi Coast is a true paradise developed vertically within a tangled overlay of streets, alleys and shops. Here you will find the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta housing some precious works like polychrome marble altars.
Although not strictly part of the Amalfi coast, Capri is a classic day trip from Positano. To get a more authentic feel for this dramatically beautiful island you should stay as long as possible.
Another pearl of the coast is Ravello, an elegant and refined village, dipped in green and characterized by luxurious villas. Ravello is famous all around the world for its Festival, in the garden of Villa Rufolo, where an evocative setting and the emotion of listening to great music create an experience of extraordinary intensity. The heart of Ravello is represented by Piazza Vescovado, framed by the architecture of Palazzo Rufolo and the Cathedral with its magnificent portal (the first ever made with this innovative technique) and 10-feet-high bell tower.
