Beaches along the Mediterranean Sea are among the most beautiful in the world and many of the best ones are located in Italy. A huge number of the beaches here have been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag Award which is given to the most eco-friendly beaches and marinas in the world. Around 148 Italian beaches have been given this award due to their perfect condition and safe bathing areas.
In order to receive the Blue Flag award beaches should meet and maintain around 32 criteria in the following aspects:
- Environmental Education and Information
- Water Quality
- Environmental Management
- Safety and Services
The awards are given once per season. The program is operated under protection of the Foundation for Environmental Education and is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. The main goals of the Blue Flag programme are connecting the public with their surroundings and encouraging them to learn more about their environment.
The name of the award originates in France where the Blue Flag was a symbol of environmental awareness and children were invited to write a message with their name and name of the nearest beach and put it in a plastic bottle. The idea was to highlight the problem of dumping garbage into the world’s oceans.
