  1. Environmental Education and Information
  2. Water Quality

The awards are given once per season. The program is operated under protection of the Foundation for Environmental Education and is headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. The main goals of the Blue Flag programme are connecting the public with their surroundings and encouraging them to learn more about their environment.

The name of the award originates in France where the Blue Flag was a symbol of environmental awareness and children were invited to write a message with their name and name of the nearest beach and put it in a plastic bottle. The idea was to highlight the problem of dumping garbage into the world’s oceans.
