Puglia, also known as Apulia, is the most southeastern region which is located on the ‘heel’ of the ‘boot’ of Italy. It has an area of 19,366 square kilometers and a population of 4 million.
Puglia is the least mountainous region of Italy consisting of broad plains and low-lying hills. The only mountainous areas, the Gargano promontory and the Dauni Mountains, do not exceed 1,150 meters and are in the north of the region. The Tremeti Islands in the Adriatic are also a part of Puglia.
This is very hot and dry region with only few rivers found at the foot of the Gargano promontory. This area is one of the largest and most productive plains in Italy where a significant amount of both wine and olive oil is produced.
Puglia’s location between two beautiful coastlines makes it one of the famous tourist destinations in Italy. There are miles of unspoilt beaches, spectacular cliffs and rocky coves which are worth to be seen.
The region has plenty of historical, artistic and architectural wonders from the gorgeous buildings in the center to the rural landscapes. There are lots of medieval castles, wonderful cathedrals and amazing churches. Various architectural elements and styles are harmoniously brought together in the Castel del Monte named after the Benedictine church of Santa Maria del Monte which has a rich and varied history.
The 400 kilometers of coastline makes Puglia one of the most beautiful Italian coastal regions. Coasts with white and sandy beaches and wild cliffs offer visitor a spectacular landscape and crystal clear sea where it is possible enjoy a variety of water sports.
Puglia region has an ancient tradition in ceramics handicrafts that began in the 8th century BC. There is a huge production of vases, plates and any kind of ceramic and maiolica items in different shapes and colors.

Shopping: The market of Grumo Appula is a handicraft market which takes place every year in August. In the same month, another handicraft market takes place in the town of Alberobello. In the town of Lecce, an interesting flower market is held in the Month of May for ten days and on the last Sunday of every month there is a flea market in Piazza Libertini.
