All sightseeing in the region "Basilicata"

Basilicata, also known as Lucania, is a region in the south of Italy which covers an area of 9,995 square kilometers with a population of only 600 000 inhabitants. The capital of the region is Potenza.

Location

Although it is a mainly internal region, Basilicata touches two seas: the Ionian and Tyrrhenian. The Ionic coast with the two famous sea resorts of Metaponto and Policoro offers wide beaches either sandy or pebbly and partially surrounded by pine woods. The Gulf of Policastro on the Tyrrhenian side has higher and more intended coasts where steep promontories alternate with small beaches washed by a crystal-clear sea.

Sights and things to do

The region is largely unspoilt and local culture and traditions have remained unchanged over centuries and where the people are very proud of their history and independence. The Basilicata countryside is very rich in natural beauty and is surrounded by three National Parks: The Cilento, the Pollino and the Sila. These parks contain vast areas of unspoilt forest and spectacular views across the mountains where wild animals are plentiful. There are facilities for white water rafting, horse riding and trekking and a ski slope on Mount Sirino which is open during the winter months. The upmarket Maratea resort attracts large numbers of wealthy Italian tourists in the summer. The region is full of restaurants and Agriturismos offering delicious local food and wine at very low prices.

The 20 mile coast of Basilicata on the Tyrrhenian side is famous around the world for the richness and beauty of its sea beds offering numerous small beaches for relaxing under the sun and swimming in the crystal clear water. It is a good idea to take a boat tour in order to visit the many caves that form the coastline.
