Abruzzo is a region of Italy located in central part of the country to the east of Lazio. The capital of the region is L’Aquilla. It is bordered on the west by the Apennines and on the east by 150 kilometers of coastline on the Adriatic.
It is one of the most mountainous regions in Italy. There are numerous rivers in the area and the two largest are the Pescara and the Sangro. One third of the region is made up of national parks and it is also a home to the country’s best-preserved medieval and Renaissance hill-towns. Abruzzo also boasts an incredibly attractive coastline. The sandy shores along the 140 km coast alternate with pebbly beaches surrounded by green hills covered with mulberries, strawberry trees and pine forests. The natural environment of the region is protected by three National parks: Abruzzo, Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga and Maiella. Rare species of flora and fauna can be found here.
Recently the tourism has increased in Abruzzo due to its beautiful castles, churches, cathedrals and medieval towns. The Romanesque style was brought to the area by Benedictine monks from Cluny. There are medieval and Renaissance paintings in Abruzzo. One of the most significant examples is the series of frescoes in the Oratory of San Pallegrino in Binimaco and the frescoes in the Cathedral of Atri. There are over 500 castles, watchtowers and walls around the region, all built by locals in order to defend their land against invaders.
The region has 21 ski areas with 368 kilometers of runs which can be found only within a few hours of Rome. There are also a huge number of ski resorts located in the highest region of Apennines which are comparable to many Alpine resorts due to their proximity to the Adriatic and winter precipitation patterns.
