A perfect place to live

Although Southern Italy has historically lagged the country’s northern half in terms of economic advancement, it is an excellent place to get away from the crowds. The regions that comprise southern Italy make up a little less than half of Italy’s total land mass. The area is also famous for its beaches and is mostly visited by Italians in summer.

While the city-states in the north were prospering individually, the south focused entirely on one kingdom which grew up around Naples. Because the south was more traditionally agricultural and less reliant on trade, the parts of southern Italy which were further from Naples were cut off from the same kind of economic growth experienced by city-states with lots of incoming merchants.

Cultural differences

For example, Sicily is home to several important Greek ruins, as it was home to a large Greek settlement dating back to the 8th century. The south is also where you’re more likely to see influences from northern Africa, both in terms of some of the architecture and the cuisine.

The regions that comprise South of Italy include: Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily.

Properties in Campania

Campania has one of the most expensive and the cheapest properties in Italy. Houses located on the Amalfi Coast or on an island such as Capri are simply beyond the rich of most buyers costing more than a million euro. But at the same time you can find affordable options near the Cilento coast which is a south of Amalfi Coast. This is a place with charming historical small towns and amazing beaches.

Sicilian property

The largest and most populous island located in the South of Italy is Sicily. Here you can find relatively new market with abundant property offering excellent value for money. For example, for 100,000 euro you may buy a two-bedroom apartment in a seaside town or a small farmhouse needing some repairs up in the hills with magnificent views.
