Ravenna is a capital city of the Province of Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It is located slightly inland and connected to the Adriatic Sea by the Candiano Canal. The landscape of Ravenna varies from mountains across hills and valleys and flat plains to the marshes of the Po River Delta.

The center of the world

The city of Ravenna has been the center of the world for several centuries, first as capital of the Western Roman Empire and then as center of Byzantine Empire which enriched architecture of the city with monuments and mosaics. Ravenna is considered as one of the most interesting cities of Emilia-Romagna region with an impressive complex of early Christian and Byzantine monuments such as Baptistery of Neon, The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, The Arian Baptistery and many others.

In spite of many battles over the years, Ravenna has somehow managed to escape serious damage and is now considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the Emilia-Romagna region.

Sights

The city has much to offer. Apart from visiting spectacular churches, castles and monuments in Ravenna, you should also not miss other important events in the area. Every year the city hosts a classical music commemoration, The Ravenna Festival. Opera performances are held in the Teatro Alighieri and outside concerts take place at the Mauro de Andre Palace (Palazzo Mauro de Andre in Italian). Musicians and conductors from around the world are attracted to this festival and it is always well attended.

The best way to explore Ravenna is by foot and at leisure. History is written on the streets of the city. The beauty of the area can be also found in the old center which is closed to traffic and vibrant with local color and life. There you will also see the amazing square with its open cafes, where you can sit and enjoy spectacular views.
