Genoa is the capital of Liguria region of Italy and is one of the largest European cities on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea with a population of 593 000 inhabitants. It is also the largest seaport in Italy with 30 kilometers of coastline.

Economic center

Genoa is one of the main economic centers in Italy forming the southern corner of the Milan-Turin- Genoa industrial triangle of north-west Italy. There are massive steelworks and shipyards found in the area. The city also has one of the most important international ports as well as a ferry port and a marina leisure craft.

Genoa was selected as the European Capital of Culture for the year 2004. It has much to offer such as grand towers, the fortresses and thick walls used to protect the city, simple fisherman villages, ancient gardens and high cliffs of the gulf. Sometimes Genoa is referred to as ‘la Superba’ (‘the Proud one’) due to its glorious past and spectacular landmarks.

Lighthouse in Genoa

The most noticeable sight in Genoa is ‘La Lanterna’ which is 76 meters high 12 th century lighthouse in the port. It was built on the top of a natural rock and is the fifth tallest and third oldest lighthouse in the world. It is possible to climb to the top of the tower whether using the stairs or elevators and enjoy spectacular views.

Genoa is a city full of history, art and culture. It is a perfect place for strolling around narrow streets which are twisting and turning through tall buildings, stunning architecture, historic churches and lively squares full of bars and restaurants. Main square of Genoa is called Piazza de Ferrari with a large fountain at its center.

Genoa has a borderline humid subtropical and Mediterranean climate. The average annual temperature is around 19 C during the day and 13 C at night. There are severe winds in the city, especially during winter when northern winds often bring cool air from the Po Valley.
