Unesco World Heritage Site
Ferrara is a city in Emilia-Romagna region of Italy and the capital city of the Province of Ferrara. The city is located 50 km north-east of Bologna. There are broad streets and numerous ancient buildings dating from 14 th century. The city has recently qualified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ferrara is enclosed by over nine kilometers of ancient walls which are along with walls surrounding Tuscany are the best preserved ones in Italy. The city is a part of the historical region which is well known for having one of the oldest universities in the world as well as for its regal Renaissance and Romanesque towns. Ferrara is also an agricultural center with great beach resorts. The city is also famous for being home to legendary automakers like Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Pagani and more.
In the very center of Ferrara you will find the spectacular Estense Castle which was constructed at the end of the 14 th century. It is an imposing brick building with four monumental bastions which also was the home of the Este family. The family lived in the historic City Hall before the Castle was built.
There are many Renaissance palaces in the city including the Palazzo dei Diamanti and the Palazzo Schifanoia which has some interesting frescoes. The best preserved Renaissance building of Ferrara is the Casa Romei. It used to be the home of Giovanni Romei and his wife Polissena d’Este before being inherited by nuns of the Corpus Domini order. The nuns looked after the house well and never made any alterations which accounts to its immaculate condition. There are also huge number of beautiful churches, squares, gardens and theaters which are worth visiting.
Ferrara is also a university town with the excellent university with faculties of law, architecture, medicine, natural sciences and pharmacy. The university has also a library which contains valuable historic manuscripts. The facility looks after the Ferrara Botanic Gardens.
The city has much to offer. Every year Ferrara holds a Busker’s Festival which involves a parade of hundreds of the best street musicians in the world. There is also a ten day balloon festival held in the city which is one of the largest in Europe.
