Location

Bologna is the capital and largest city of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy with a population of around 386 000 inhabitants. It is located in the Pedemontana Apennine zone, where the valley of the Po opens out to the Emilia plain and is also a crossroad between major directions of national traffic.

The territory of the city is varied with hills and mountains. Hills and highlands that surround Bologna compose the Bolognese Apennines and its highest peak, the Corno delle Scale reach an altitude of 6, 562 feet.

Historic center

Bologna is a wonderful city considered by many Italians to be the second to Venice for its beauty. Surrounded by hills, the city center is still looking much as it was during the Renaissance with pretty red-colored buildings, medieval palaces and charming streets with covered walkways and marbled floors.

Bologna is well administrated city which has one of the largest and best preserved historic centers in Italy. The architecture of the area is amazing and is characterized by lots of porticos (porch leading to the entrance of a building). Another defining architectural trait of the city is its towers which were as numerous as 200 in the Middle Ages.

The University of Bologna

The oldest university in Europe which dates back to the 11 th century is located in Bologna and a large percentage of the population is made up from university students. Due to this fact, there is a lively atmosphere in the city and excellent nightlife. The University of Bologna was founded as a law school by a group of scholars trying to settle the disputes between the Holy Roman Empire and the Papacy.

The city is often referred to as the ‘food capital’ of Italy due to its famous cuisine. There are several famous dishes that originate from here which include Parma ham, parmesan cheese, lasagna and spaghetti Bolognese.
